Narendra Modi inaugurates India’s longest cable stayed bridge Sudarshan Setu know how bridges are built in water

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated the country’s longest cable bridge ‘Sudarshan Setu’. This bridge is built in Dwarka, Gujarat and the grandeur of this bridge is being discussed a lot. The picture of this bridge is also going viral on social media. This bridge will connect Bayt Dwarka island in the Arabian Sea to mainland Okha. You must have heard a lot about its grandeur, but have you ever wondered how these bridges in the middle of the sea are built. So today let us tell you how a bridge is built even when there is always water…

Before building a bridge across any river or sea, the place is thoroughly examined. It is seen whether a bridge can be built there or not and at which places pillars can be built. When there is greater depth in the sea, the land is selected accordingly. After making its plan, the work of building the bridge starts. Then the bridge is built keeping in mind the water flow, soil condition etc.

What is the whole process?

Even in water, a bridge is built by filling the foundation. For this, a deep foundation is filled for the pillar and a space is first created to fill this foundation. Have you ever seen the well of death, in which stunts are performed on a car or bike, in the same way a space is prepared in water. The name of this type of foundation is Cofferdam. For this, big plates are joined together and a well is made in the middle of the water.

After this, water is not able to come in nor go out in the space of this well. This is just like you bury a pipe in the ground in the middle of water or keep a straw in a glass of water. Then the water in between is taken out and in such a situation an empty space is created between the water. The water flowing in the river flows from the surrounding areas but does not come inside it. Then pillars are constructed in it and the outer cofferdam is removed. In this way many pillars are made one by one.

After the construction of these pillars, the entire bridge is completed by building a platform on top of them. The pillar is strengthened by filling it properly with cement and concrete etc.

How special is this bridge?

  • According to official information, this 2.32 kilometer long bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 979 crore.
  • There is a 900 meter long cable-stayed section in the middle of the entire bridge and there is a 2.45 kilometer long road to reach the bridge.
  • Let us tell you that there are 2.50 meter wide footpaths on both sides of the 27.20 meter wide bridge with four lanes.
  • This bridge was earlier known as ‘Signature Bridge’ and now its name has been changed to ‘Sudarshan Setu’.
  • Bayt Dwarka is an island near Okha port, about 30 kilometers from Dwarka city where the famous Dwarkadhish temple of Lord Krishna is located.
  • Earlier pilgrims had to depend on boat transport to reach Bayt Dwarka and with the construction of this bridge they will be able to travel anytime.
